Africa-Press – Ghana. <\/strong><\/span>Political Historian at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor Samuel Adu-Gyamfi, has called for the establishment of an independent commission to facilitate presidential debates in Ghana, as happens in other countries.<\/b><\/p>\n

He suggested that the media, which is the 4th estate of the realm can even lead this commission to enable it to play that role well.<\/p>\n

The presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said his main opponent, former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is running away from debating him for fear of being exposed.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9fm in Kumasi with Sir John, Prof Adu-Gyamfi, said presidential debates should be mandatory.<\/p>\n

\u201c… I think presidential debates should be part of our political conventions. It is something that we need to develop, we should make it part of our political conventions,\u201d he said on July 22.<\/p>\n

He said the establishment of a commission for presidential debates could help bolster the confidence of the candidates in participating in debates.<\/p>\n

Prof Adu-Gyamfi said presidential debates are very good for our democracy since it will help candidates bring out their policy ideas, potentials among others.<\/p>\n
