General Captain of the national football team, Asamoah Gyan, says he is still trying to figure out the role that comes with his new title.<\/p>\n
According to him, although he accepted the title after the\u00a0captain\u2019s band was stripped off him, coach of the Black Stars, Kwesi Appiah, did not define the role; except to say \u201cyou are going to control everything here.\u201d<\/p>\n
In an interview on Accra-based Joy FM, Asamoah Gyan said he wondered in his mind \u201cwhat am I gonna do there\u201d since he was not the captain of the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked the coach so if I am on the field what\u2019s gonna happen? I didn\u2019t like the answers so I had to just let it go. I asked him, what if I\u2019m coming on, will the arm band be given to me to show respect? He said no, you are no more the captain.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was like, you gonna control everything here as the general captain, outside the field because of your experience, the captain can come to you and share ideas\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t understand the word general captain but people spoke to me, explained things to me, I was going there as a normal player who\u2019s going to die for his nation. I had to just psych myself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince I got into football, since I became a professional, I don\u2019t understand general captain. A captain is a captain. I don\u2019t understand the meaning of general captain. It\u2019s a title on me now but I don\u2019t understand but I have to accept it. And I said ok, what is the captain gonna do?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Relationship with Dede<\/strong><\/p>\n He debunked speculations that there was a rivalry between him and the team\u2019s captain, Andre Dede Ayew and that although they had a working relationship, they were not friends off the field.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no rivalry between us. I have never fought him. He\u2019s my team mate, my captain. It doesn\u2019t mean Andre is my friend. We are teammates. There are certain things that he tells his friends that he wouldn\u2019t tell me. Outside the camp he\u2019s also got his friends. I also have my friends. It doesn\u2019t mean we have a rivalry between us. The love is still there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Describing Dede as a \u201cgood guy\u201d, Asamoah Gyan said he had a conversation with him following Coach Kwesi Appiah\u2019s decision to strip him of the title.<\/p>\n \u201cHe is a good guy and he was saying some reasonable things [but] if I were Dede I wouldn\u2019t have accepted it because there were a lot of controversies.<\/p>\n \u201cHe had no choice\u2026if I were him, the back and forth, I would say keep your thing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Relationship with Kwasi Appiah<\/strong><\/p>\n The Ghanaian striker also noted that although the coach\u2019s decision was painful, he still has a good relationship with him.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s not a regular caller like the others. If he needs something that he feels that I can help, he\u2019ll call me and if I need something I feel that he can help, I call him. I\u2019m being frank but it doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t like him.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a relationship but this is work and he feels I wasn\u2019t ready to be a starter. I respect that.
