The migrants were hoping to reach Senegal enroute to Europe through the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>The truth of what actually happened only emerged after ex-leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/africafeeds.com\/2021\/02\/05\/gambia-tension-heightens-over-reported-return-of-yahya-jammeh\/\">Yahya Jammeh<\/a>\u00a0left office.<\/p>\n<p>Since his exit from power in 2017, he has been implicated by some of his former soldiers, who said he ordered the killings.<\/p>\n<p>Two Gambian soldiers who worked for Jammeh\u2019s hit squad in 2019 admitted to participating on Jammeh\u2019s orders in the 2005 execution of the 59 West African migrants, including 44 Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Malick Jatta and Corporal Omar A. Jallow revealed to Gambia\u2019s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) that the migrants were executed by the \u201cJunglers\u201d squad across the Gambian border in\u00a0Senegalese territory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-ad id_inline_ad0 id_ad_content-horiz-center\"><span class=\"td-adspot-title\">&#8211; Advertisement &#8211;<\/span><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8418745309882975\" data-ad-slot=\"3250254809\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\"><ins id=\"aswift_3_expand\" title=\"Advertisement\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\"><ins id=\"aswift_3_anchor\"><\/ins><\/ins><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe were told they were mercenaries,\u201d Jatta said.<\/p>\n<p>He confessed to have shot and killed one of the migrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard people shouting in the forest saying \u2018save us Jesus,\u2019\u201d Jatta said.<\/p>\n<p>Jallow also told the TRRC that Lt Col Solo Bojang, the leader of the operation, told the men that \u201cthe order from Yahya Jammeh is that they are all to be executed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2005, some 59 West African migrants were murdered in the Gambia.
