{"id":95860,"date":"2025-03-21T18:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T18:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/uncategorized\/minister-bemoans-extinction-of-some-african-languages"},"modified":"2025-04-20T13:07:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-20T13:07:51","slug":"minister-bemoans-extinction-of-some-african-languages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ghana\/all-news\/minister-bemoans-extinction-of-some-african-languages","title":{"rendered":"Minister Bemoans Extinction of some African Languages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Ghana. <\/strong><\/span><b>Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thursday said the report on extinction of some African Languages within a century should be a source of worry to all.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>He said language was the embodiment of a people\u2019s culture and identity hence African\u2019s should be concerned over the extinction of some of its languages spoken by smaller communities.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ablakwa said this at a flag raising ceremony in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>The OIF is an organisation, which comprised 93 member states and governments with a mission to promote the French Language, cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, and democracy, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ablakwa said Africa was a hub of linguistic and cultural wealth, accounting for approximately one-third of the world\u2019s languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the UNESCO Atlas of the World\u2019s Languages in Danger estimates that up to 10 per cent of African languages, particularly those spoken by small communities, could disappear within a century. This must be a source of worry for all of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, called on governments across Africa to consciously promote multilingualism, including indigenous languages, as a tool for unity, peace, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Promoting multiligualism would foster social cohesion, inclusivity and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated the Government\u2019s commitment to institutionalising and promoting the use of first languages as the medium of teaching and learning in the early years of education and care in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will, in addition, incorporate indigenous knowledge, traditions, and stories into teaching and learning materials to make learning more meaningful for our children,\u201d Mr Ablakwa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are convinced that this is one of the surest ways of preserving our indigenous languages and culture while maximising educational outcomes among our learners,\u201d he indicated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Ghana<\/span> Follow <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Africa-Press<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Ghana.
