Dans le cas des trois laure\u0301ats 2025 pour la physique, on peut donc dire qu\u2019ils voient enfin le bout du tunnel. Mais un tunnel quantique. John Clarke, Michel Devoret et John Martinis sont re\u0301compense\u0301s pour avoir mis en e\u0301vidence, en 1985 a\u0300 Berkeley, des proprie\u0301te\u0301s que l\u2019on croyait re\u0301serve\u0301es au monde des particules, et qui s\u2019exercent pourtant au niveau macroscopique: l\u2019effet tunnel, et la quantification de l\u2019e\u0301nergie.<\/p>\n<p><b>Un effet tunnel macroscopique<\/b><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019effet tunnel a e\u0301te\u0301 mis en e\u0301vidence en 1928 gra\u0302ce aux travaux du physicien George Gamow, qui l\u2019a utilise\u0301 pour expliquer la de\u0301sinte\u0301gration alpha de certains noyaux radioactifs: une particule peut s\u2019e\u0301chapper du noyau en franchissant une barrie\u0300re d\u2019e\u0301nergie pourtant infranchissable en the\u0301orie. Tout se passe alors comme si la particule se frayait un tunnel a\u0300 travers cette barrie\u0300re (c\u2019est une image&#8230;) pour passer de l\u2019autre co\u0302te\u0301.<\/p>\n<p>Inspire\u0301 par les travaux the\u0301oriques d\u2019Anthony Leggett (prix Nobel de physique 2003) sur l\u2019effet tunnel dans une jonction Josephson (compose\u0301e de deux supraconducteurs se\u0301pare\u0301s par un isolant, ndlr), John Clarke, dans son laboratoire de Berkeley, observe en 1985 que le circuit supraconducteur qu\u2019il e\u0301tudie avec Michel Devoret (alors postdoctorant) et John Martinis (doctorant), cense\u0301 rester dans un e\u0301tat stable sans produire de tension, se met soudain a\u0300 ge\u0301ne\u0301rer une tension mesurable. Autrement dit, le syste\u0300me a re\u0301ussi a\u0300 franchir tout seul la barrie\u0300re d\u2019e\u0301nergie, constitue\u0301e par l\u2019isolant, qui le bloquait. C\u2019est la preuve qu\u2019un effet tunnel s\u2019est produit, mais cette fois a\u0300 l\u2019e\u0301chelle d\u2019un objet macroscopique.<\/p>\n<p><b>En couple, les e\u0301lectrons perdent leur individualite\u0301<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pour comprendre ce tour de passe-passe, il faut plonger dans la physique e\u0301trange des supraconducteurs. A\u0300 tre\u0300s basse tempe\u0301rature, les e\u0301lectrons cessent de se comporter comme des particules isole\u0301es: ils s\u2019apparient deux a\u0300 deux pour former ce qu\u2019on appelle des paires de Cooper. En couple, les e\u0301lectrons perdent leur individualite\u0301: ils se fondent tous dans une me\u0302me onde quantique, un seul \u00ab train \u00bb qui file sans re\u0301sistance, comme s\u2019il creusait son propre passage a\u0300 travers la matie\u0300re. C\u2019est cette cohe\u0301sion parfaite qui permet au syste\u0300me, dans l\u2019expe\u0301rience de Berkeley, de franchir la barrie\u0300re d\u2019e\u0301nergie d\u2019un seul tenant.<\/p>\n<p>Mais ce n\u2019est pas tout. En e\u0301tudiant de pre\u0300s la tension produite par leur circuit, ils remarquent que celui-ci ne change pas d\u2019e\u0301tat de fac\u0327on continue. Il \u00ab saute \u00bb d\u2019un niveau a\u0300 un autre, comme s\u2019il montait ou descendait les marches d\u2019un escalier invisible. Chaque marche correspond a\u0300 une quantite\u0301 d\u2019e\u0301nergie bien pre\u0301cise, un quantum, exactement comme dans les atomes. Un re\u0301sultat fascinant: les lois de la physique quantique, jusque-la\u0300 confine\u0301es au monde des particules, s\u2019appliquent ici a\u0300 un objet que l\u2019on peut litte\u0301ralement tenir entre les doigts.<\/p>\n<p><b>L\u2019ave\u0300nement des technologies quantiques<\/b><\/p>\n<p>En re\u0301ve\u0301lant que leur circuit ne pouvait e\u0301changer l\u2019e\u0301nergie qu\u2019en paquets bien de\u0301finis, John Clarke, Michel Devoret et John Martinis ont pose\u0301 les fondations d\u2019une nouvelle physique applique\u0301e. Leurs minuscules circuits sont devenus les ance\u0302tres directs des qubits supraconducteurs, de ve\u0301ritables atomes artificiels utilise\u0301s comme unite\u0301s d\u2019information capables d\u2019exister a\u0300 la fois dans deux e\u0301tats, 0 et 1, a\u0300 la base des ordinateurs quantiques.<\/p>\n<p>Plus ge\u0301ne\u0301ralement, l\u2019e\u0301mergence des proprie\u0301te\u0301s quantiques a\u0300 l\u2019e\u0301chelle macroscopique irrigue de\u0301sormais les technologies comme la cryptographie ou les capteurs quantiques extre\u0302mement sensibles&#8230; En re\u0301compensant les pionniers du genre, le comite\u0301 Nobel salue, un sie\u0300cle apre\u0300s la naissance de la me\u0301canique quantique en 1925, le moment ou\u0300 elle sort enfin du laboratoire pour s\u2019introduire dans notre quotidien.<\/p>\n<p>A\u0300 tre\u0300s basse tempe\u0301rature, les e\u0301lectrons d\u2019abord de\u0301sordonne\u0301s (1) s\u2019associent deux a\u0300 deux pour former des paires de Cooper (2).
