La plane\u0300te Trappist-1b est probablement de\u0301pourvue d\u2019atmosphe\u0300re, selon une e\u0301tude publie\u0301e le 27 mars 2023 dans la revue Nature. Il s\u2019agit du premier et tre\u0300s attendu re\u0301sultat du te\u0301lescope spatial James Webb concernant Trappist-1, un e\u0301tonnant syste\u0300me solaire de sept plane\u0300tes de type Terre a\u0300 40 anne\u0301es-lumie\u0300re de nous, dans la constellation du Verseau.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Une tempe\u0301rature estime\u0301e a\u0300 126\u00b0C au soleil<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Trappist-1b est la plus proche de l\u2019e\u0301toile. Elle orbite a\u0300 seulement 1,5 million de km, c\u2019est 100 fois moins que la distance Terre-Soleil. Elle est en rotation synchrone, autrement dit, elle pre\u0301sente toujours la me\u0302me face a\u0300 l\u2019e\u0301toile, toute comme la Lune avec la Terre. C\u2019est gra\u0302ce a\u0300 cette caracte\u0301ristique que les chercheurs ont pu de\u0301duire l\u2019absence probable d\u2019atmosphe\u0300re, comme l\u2019explique a\u0300 Sciences et Avenir Pierre-Olivier Lagage, astrophysicien au Commissariat atomique (CEA) et co-auteur de l\u2019article. \u00ab Le co\u0302te\u0301 jour est chauffe\u0301 en permanence. En pre\u0301sence d\u2019une atmosphe\u0300re, des vents transporteraient de la chaleur du co\u0302te\u0301 jour vers le co\u0302te\u0301 nuit. Sans atmosphe\u0300re pour redistribuer l\u2019e\u0301nergie, la tempe\u0301rature ne serait pas la me\u0302me. \u00bb<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Gra\u0302ce a\u0300 des mode\u0300les nume\u0301riques, les chercheurs ont ainsi calcule\u0301 qu\u2019en pre\u0301sence d\u2019une atmosphe\u0300re, la tempe\u0301rature atteindrait 400 K (126\u00b0C), contre 500 K sans. Il restait donc a\u0300 mesurer cette tempe\u0301rature in situ. En guise de thermome\u0300tre, le JWST a utilise\u0301 l\u2019instrument MIRI, le seul a\u0300 observer l\u2019Univers dans l\u2019infrarouge (IR) moyen, soit une longueur d\u2019onde comprise entre 5 \u2013 28 microme\u0300tres. \u00ab MIRI e\u0301tait tout indique\u0301 car dans cette gamme de tempe\u0301ratures allant de 400 a\u0300 500 K, un objet e\u0301met principalement dans l\u2019IR moyen. En mesurant le rayonnement, nous avons pu en de\u0301duire une tempe\u0301rature autour de 500 K, correspondant donc a\u0300 l\u2019hypothe\u0300se \u00ab sans atmosphe\u0300re \u00bb \u00bb.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>A la recherche d\u2019atmosphe\u0300res sur les autres plane\u0300tes<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Obtenir un tel re\u0301sultat sur un objet aussi e\u0301loigne\u0301, et colle\u0301 a\u0300 son e\u0301toile, est un tour de force. Pour cela, les chercheurs ont observe\u0301 le changement de luminosite\u0301 infrarouge de l\u2019ensemble \u00ab e\u0301toile-plane\u0300te \u00bb lorsque la plane\u0300te passe derrie\u0300re l\u2019e\u0301toile. Le rayonnement diminue alors d\u2019une quantite\u0301 e\u0301gale a\u0300 celui de la plane\u0300te. L\u2019e\u0301toile e\u0301tant 1000 fois plus lumineuse que Trappist-1b, la variation du flux infrarouge n\u2019est que de 0,1%, ce qui donne une ide\u0301e de la pre\u0301cision ne\u0301cessaire.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Pour confirmer l\u2019absence d\u2019atmosphe\u0300re, les chercheurs vont maintenant estimer la tempe\u0301rature co\u0302te\u0301 nuit, qui devrait e\u0302tre beaucoup plus basse. La me\u0301thode est la\u0300 encore subtile. \u00ab Juste avant que la plane\u0300te ne passe devant son e\u0301toile, on rec\u0327oit le rayonnement de l\u2019e\u0301toile plus le rayonnement de la plane\u0300te co\u0302te\u0301 nuit. Comme on connait le rayonnement de l\u2019e\u0301toile seule, de\u0301termine\u0301 lors d\u2019une e\u0301clipse, nous pouvons de\u0301duire le rayonnement issu de la plane\u0300te. \u00bb La mesure du co\u0302te\u0301 nuit fera partie des prochaines missions du JWST, lance\u0301 par ailleurs dans une e\u0301tude exhaustive du syste\u0300me Trappist-1. Des re\u0301sultats concernant Trappist-1c, un peu plus e\u0301loigne\u0301e de l\u2019e\u0301toile, sont attendus d\u2019ici un a\u0300 deux mois.<\/b><br \/>\n<b>En s\u2019e\u0301loignant de l\u2019e\u0301toile, la probabilite\u0301 de trouver des atmosphe\u0300res va augmenter. L\u2019enjeu est important car les e\u0301toiles de type \u00ab naine rouge \u00bb comme Trappist-1 sont les plus abondantes dans la galaxie. De faible masse et luminosite\u0301, elles disposent malgre\u0301 tout d\u2019une zone habitable ou\u0300 les conditions de tempe\u0301ratures permettent l\u2019existence d\u2019eau liquide. Mais les naines rouges sont tre\u0300s actives, secoue\u0301es de puissantes e\u0301ruptions expe\u0301diant des flots de particules dans l\u2019espace.
