Ruto: Vulnerable groups to access NHIF for free in new funding model

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has said that the government will change the funding system to allow vulnerable groups in the country to access the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Speaking in Vihiga on Tuesday, the President said the change will cater for everyone’s healthcare.

“We are changing the funding system so that we can allow the vulnerable to access NHIF free of charge and those who are in the lower category to pay less, those who earn more to pay more,” he said.

Ruto said the move will make healthcare in the country not a privilege of the few people who can afford it but the right of everyone who requires medical care.

This comes at a time when the government proposed to increase NHIF contributions to 2.75 percent for salaried people.

This will enable the government to fund its Universal Health Coverage scheme through the NHIF.

Jobless people currently contribute Sh500 monthly but are most of the time unable to pay.
