Africa-Press – Kenya. Kajiado Governor Joseph Lenku has launched Mazingira Unit ahead of the El Nino.
The unit which he unveiled on Friday will oversee cleanliness and waste management in the county’s urban centres.
Lenku stated that his administration is taking all the necessary measures in anticipation of the projected extra-heavy rain as they also accelerate capacity to harvest rainwater.
“The establishment of the Mazingira Unit reflects our unwavering dedication to ensuring that the people of Kajiado have the right to reasonable standards of sanitation, a clean and healthy environment,” he said.
The unit will also create job opportunities for the ever-growing population.
Speaking in Ngong town, the Governor explained that his vision is to achieve a transformed and sustainable Kajiado through modulated pastoralism, livable towns, a climate-proofed physical environment and equitable access to education for children.
“My strategy is to approach each of these goals in a systematic, structured and creative manner that utilises the financial and human capital resources that we have, efficiently and effectively,” Lenku said.
The Mazingira unit is made up of county staff from the departments of Inspectorate, public health and sanitation, and environment officers among others.
Other functions of the unit’s job will be to ensure that urban, peri-urban areas and human settlements are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
“I assure all the people who reside in Kajiado that the Mazingira Unit will not be in the business of harassing anyone,” Lenku insisted.
Making clarity, the county boss said he had ensured that the composition, mandate and authority of the unit is strictly limited to its core functions.
“All those core functions, I have mentioned, are related to ensuring proper liquid and solid waste management for proper sanitation and ensuring the full participation of all stakeholders and the general public in all aspects of waste management,” Lenku added.
The event was attended by all Kajiado MCAs and a section of MPs and officials from the national government, led by Kajiado county commissioner, Jude Wesonga.
