Africa-Press – Kenya. Mbeere North Member of Parliament Geoffrey Ruku has defended President William Ruto’s gesture of donning United Democratic Alliance Party colors during the UDA’s National Governing Council meeting on Friday.
Speaking on K24 TV on Monday morning, Ruku said that the president has a political mandate to ensure democracy prevails within parties since they are pillars that carry democracy.
“The president has a political responsibility to ensure Kenya thrives as a democracy, to ensure parties are strong as the pillars which carry democracy in this country,” he said.
Ruku pointed out that the president as the party leader of his party is tasked with a responsibility to ensure the internal democracy of his party thrives and that his dressing in the political colors is just but a symbol to exercise his party duties.
“It is not true that the Kenya Kwanza administration has abandoned its duty to serve the people and embarked on early political campaigns, we can be able to chew gum as we go up the ladder,” Ruku stated.
The Mbeere legislator further stated that what Ruto has achieved within his first year is beyond measurable doubt surpassing the previous administrations.
He said the developmental projects that have been achieved by the government can be enumerated and are so many.
Ruto convened the party’s NGC meeting on Friday as the event involved political leaders allied to the party and elected parliamentarians among other political affiliates.
He arrived a few minutes before 1 pm for the first NGC since he won the Presidential elections last year.
Ruto was received by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua and UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
The Bomas auditorium was filled with UDA delegates who had put on attires having the party’s dominating the yellow colours.
Ruto appeared dressed for the occasion as he put on the party colors following suit on what was seen as the theme for the day.
The move sparked criticism from the opposition side who did not hold back on the gesture.
They accused Ruto of setting an early political campaign tone instead of delivering to the people as he was expected to.
