Africa-Press – Kenya. Chemelil Youth beat Bayern Academy 1-0 in the boys’ final of the Back to School Under -17 tournament to win the title today in Muhoroni, Kisumu County.
The event, sponsored by Kisumu Senator Prof Tom Ojienda, saw Kevin Owino net the lone goal for Chemelil Youth in the 28th minute at Chemelil Stadium.
Bayern missed several scoring chances as relentless Chemelil mounted a strong defence to guard the lead.
In the girls’ final, Kopere Starlets beat Manyatta Queens 2-1 in the final. Juliet Adhiambo scored the first goal for Kopere barely six minutes into the match before Agnes Akinyi netted the second goal just a minute before the break.
Manyatta Queens pulled a goal back through Stephanie Grace in the 52nd second minute.
Prof Ojienda, who graced the finals alongside other leaders from Nyanza, said the tournament aims to nurture talent and empower youths in the county.
The winners in the girls’ and boys’ categories were awarded trophies and bursaries.
The participants in the youth tournament were drawn from Muhoroni, Seme, Kisumu Central, Kisumu East, Nyando, Kisumu West and Nyakach sub-counties in Kisumu.
The tournament, which is themed towards environment conservation, education empowerment, and gender-based violence advocacy attracted 20 teams (both boys and girls) at the preliminary stage.
