Africa-Press – Kenya. The Orange Democratic party has scheduled a series of grassroots recruitment drives and consultative forums across the country as part of efforts to bolster its bases ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party released the itinerary on Wednesday during the Central Committee’s first meeting of the year in Nairobi where the party also disbanded its National Elections Board.
The recruitment is a continuation of phase one of the exercise launched on November 11, 2023, to enhance the party’s image ahead of the grassroots elections expected by the end of April.
Party leader Raila Odinga spearheaded the exercise in his home turf Nyanza starting with Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira and Kisumu.
While announcing the start of the exercise on November 10, 2023, Raila said the recruitment exercise would be concluded in March 2024.
During Monday’s meeting, the party’s Central Committee said the second phase of the recruitment drives will start in Busia County on Monday, January 15, 2024.
The team will then head to the neighbouring Vihiga County on the following day before pitching camp in Bungoma County on January 17.
The party said there will be a four-day break before the exercise resumes on Monday, January 22, to January 27 in the Coastal counties of Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Kwale and Mombasa in that order.
Ahead of the anticipated grassroots elections, the Central Committee recommended that the party elections be devolved to the grassroots and managed at the county level by two coordinators.
“There shall be a coordinating committee of three persons at the National level reporting directly to the Party’s Central Committee. This is aimed at improving efficiency, credibility and grassroots empowerment in the spirit of revolution which the party holds dearly.”
Emily Awita who served in the disbanded party electoral board, was retained and made the chairperson of the three-member National Coordinating Committee.
Awita will coordinate the party’s electoral affairs alongside Richard Tairo who also served in the disbanded NEB and Beatrice Askul.
