Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has sent congratulatory messages to his Azerbaijan counterpart Ilham Heydar Oglu Aliyev as the Eastern European country marks Independence Day.

Ruto said the day marks a proud moment in Azerbaijan’s history as a country.

“On behalf of the people of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey to your Excellency and through you to the people of the Republic of Azerbaijan, heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of your National Day. As Kenya and Azerbaijan commemorate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, I laud the friendly ties and cooperation that exist between the two countries,” Ruto said.

He noted that in the past two decades, the partnership between Kenya and Azerbaijan has flourished underpinned by mutual respect, cooperation and shared values.

“I note the immense potential and shared commitment to enhance our engagements and expand our partnership in new areas, including climate action, energy transition, trade and investments and tourism among others,” he said.

“As you mark this memorable day, I wish you Excellency hood health and prosperity for the great people of the Republic of Azerbaijan.”

Azerbaijan declared independence from the Russian Empire in Tiflis on May 28, 1918.

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was founded by the Azerbaijani National Council in Tiflis on 28 May 1918 after the collapse of the Russian Empire that began with the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Independence Day honours the date on which the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was founded as the first secular democratic state in the Muslim East, May 28 1918.

Since 1990, Republic Day has been celebrated as a national holiday in Azerbaijan.

Until 2021, it was marked as Republic Day. In October 2021, it was renamed and became Independence Day.
