Africa-Press – Kenya. The government has dismissed claims that the proposed reduction of the budget of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is political.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said budget cuts affecting high-profile figures including Uhuru, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and former Vice Presidents Kalonzo Musyoka and Moody Awori are not politically motivated.

“Let me be clear, these budgetary adjustments are not politically motivated,” he said.

“They are part of a broader plan to ensure fiscal discipline and prudent use of public resources.”

The government has proposed slashing Uhuru’s retirement perks by Sh94.6 million in the next financial year starting July 1, 2025.

The budget cuts will also affect former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose benefits are set to drop from Sh87.2 million to Sh63.27 million.

As detailed in the budget estimates published by the National Treasury in April, 2025, the Office of the 4th President will receive Sh276,852,213.

This will be a Sh94 million reduction from the current allocation of Sh371,459,163.

Most of the cuts will affect the projections for local and foreign travel.

In the current financial year that is nearing its end, Uhuru got Sh95 million for travel.

In the upcoming financial year, he will receive Sh43.5 million for foreign travel.

On the other hand, the current Sh29 million allocation for domestic travel has been reduced to Sh8,075,000.

The budgetary allocation for supplies and services was reduced from Sh22 million to Sh16.12 million.

Equally, the current allocation for insurance costs of Sh46 million was reduced by 50 per cent.

Meanwhile, Raila’s budget will be cut from the current Sh87,202,695 allocation to Sh63,267,581 for the next financial year.

In Raila’s office, most reductions have been witnessed for domestic travel, with the current allocation of Sh2.4 million reduced to Sh1.8 million.

The current insurance costs of Sh40 million were also reduced by Sh20 million.

Former Vice Presidents Kalonzo Musyoka and Moody Awori will each receive Sh52.9 million and Sh53.9 million, respectively.
