Ruto awards charter to Kisumu's Uzima University

Africa-Press – Kenya. Kisumu-based Uzima University has been awarded a charter by President William Ruto. The award of the charter brings the number of universities in Kenya to 68.

Awarding a university a charter is a formal recognition by a governing body that the university meets certain standards and requirements.

A charter means the institution has been granted the legal right to operate as a university, including the power to confer degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

The President presented the charter to Uzima University during a ceremony held at State House on Thursday, May 8.

The event was attended by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and other political leaders from the Nyanza region.

Archbishop Emeritus Zacchaeus Okoth, the founder of Uzima University, was also present, as was Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba.

While awarding the charter, President Ruto said the government is implementing bold, creative, and targeted reforms in the education sector.

The reforms, he noted, aim at expanding access to learning, reform the curriculum, address funding challenges, improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of training and research.

“A strong education sector is essential for inclusive development and shared prosperity as we build the necessary human capital and foster research and innovation,” Ruto said.

On his X account, Governor Nyong’o described the decision as historic, calling it a “proud moment for Kisumu and Nyanza.”

“Grateful to witness this milestone alongside Rt Hon Raila Odinga,” he added.

Uzima University began its academic journey on August 27, 2012, by admitting its first cohort of 21 students pursuing degrees in Medicine, Surgery, and Nursing.

Archbishop Okoth, motivated by the pain and challenges faced by the region’s population, founded the institution to address the dire need for medical services and expertise in Africa.

Uzima University positions itself as a beacon of excellence in medical education and research, dedicated to training knowledgeable, morally upright, and innovative healthcare professionals.

Universities granted charters by the President signify full accreditation and autonomy to award degrees.

Recent additions to this list include the Islamic University of Kenya and the National Intelligence Research University, along with others like Management University of Africa, Tangaza University, and Riara University.
