Africa-Press – Kenya. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has criticised opposition leaders for allegedly preaching division and disunity among the people of Kenya.
Speaking at Ithookwe Showground during the Kitui Central Constituency Empowerment Programme, Kindiki expressed disappointment at hearing divisive rhetoric from leaders who have held high government positions for many years.
The Deputy President assured the residents of Kitui and all Kenyans that Kenya Kwanza will deliver on its campaign promises, despite the economic challenges inherited due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have come here for development, not for campaigning. I urge those leaders who are travelling around the country politicking to stop and wait for 2027,” he said.
He added that the government has already introduced policies providing relief to Kenyans.
Kindiki highlighted some of the state’s plans for Kitui, including a last-mile electricity connectivity project. Sh2 billion has been allocated to connect approximately 16,000 households, with Kitui Central constituency set to have at least 2,000 homes connected.
He also mentioned the ongoing construction of the 225-kilometre Kibwezi-Mutomo-Kitui Road, which had been delayed due to compensation issues.
“In May, Sh800 million was approved for compensation through the National Land Commission,” he noted.
The Deputy President added that Sh975 million has been allocated for the construction of the Kyuso-Tseikuru-Tharaka Nithi Road.
He further revealed that the government is working on upgrading Ithookwe Showground, which will host the Mashujaa Day celebrations later this year.
Kindiki outlined other government initiatives, including subsidised fertilisers to boost agricultural production and the construction of modern markets. Kitui County has benefited with five modern markets out of the 400 being developed across the country’s 47 counties.
“Our youth will utilise the ICT hubs within these markets to create employment and will also benefit from free Wi-Fi provided at the hubs,” he said.
He praised the nationwide housing programme, noting that over 250,000 youths are currently employed on construction sites. He urged them to register for the Climate Works Programme, open from 3rd to 15th June 2025, which aims to employ over 110,000 youths.
The Deputy President also encouraged Kenyans to register with Taifa Care through the Social Health Authority to access universal health coverage benefits.
Kindiki was accompanied by Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, the President’s aide Farouk Kibet, and MPs Caleb Mule (Machakos Town), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East), Mwengi Mutuse (Kibwezi West), Martin Wanyonyi Pepela (Webuye East), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), and Dominic Eli Letipila (Samburu North).
Also present were PS for Livestock Jonathan Mueke, Kitui Speaker Kevin Kinengo, and several MCAs.
