Raila Hails Modi on 75th Birthday and Warm Ties

Africa-Press – Kenya. ODM leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday sent birthday wishes to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he turned 75, recalling their personal bond that dates back more than a decade.

In a video message, Raila said he has known Modi for over 15 years, beginning when Modi served as chief minister of the state of Gujarat.

He recounted their first meeting during Modi’s visit to Kenya while Raila was Prime Minister in the grand-coalition government.

“I was very impressed by the way he was conducting himself, his openness, his sincerity, his sense of duty, and most importantly, his sense of humour. I want to wish him many more birthdays in the future,” Raila said.

Modi warmly welcomed the gesture, thanking Raila and pledging to sustain the historic bond between the two countries.

“Thank you former PM Raila Odinga for your kind wishes. India and Kenya will continue to collaborate for the benefit of the people of the Global South,” Modi posted on X.

The Global South refers to a group of countries, mostly in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Caribbean, that share common histories of colonialism, underdevelopment or structural disadvantage in the world economy.

Kenya and India established diplomatic relations in 1948, each maintaining embassies in the other’s capital, laying the foundation for a long-standing partnership.

The exchange between the two leaders, blending personal warmth and state-to-state goodwill, drew admiration online.

“It seems like the whole world is wishing you a happy birthday today,” one social media user said, with another adding: “Everyone is a fan of Modi.”

Others praised the show of diplomacy: “It’s inspiring to see leaders committed to strengthening ties and fostering development across the Global South. Together, progress is truly possible.”

Another simply wrote: “True leadership in action.” And one more summed it up: “Diplomacy at work. Strong ties build stronger futures.”
