Africa-Press – Kenya. The Judicial Service Commission has announced the promotion of 117 magistrates across various cadres, marking a significant step in strengthening Kenya’s judicial capacity and enhancing access to justice.
The promotions followed interviews conducted between August 4 to 13, 2025, and were ratified during commission meetings held on September 11 and 15, 2025.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the promotions took effect immediately.
Among those elevated, nine magistrates were promoted to the position of Chief Magistrate.
They are Kimilu Esther Kalunde, Rotich Paul Kipkosgei, Macharia James Muriuki, Wambilyanga Joane Namrome, Kituku Justus Mulei, Ireri Benson Nyaga, Ooko Peter Oduor, Magori Jared Ogoti, and Kayila Dolphina Atieno Alego.
Sixty-seven magistrates were promoted to the rank of Senior Principal Magistrate, reflecting the largest single cadre advancement in this round of promotions.
The commission also elevated six officers to the position of Principal Magistrate.
They are Shimenga Maureen Iberia, Bii Japheth Cheruiyot, Nyamu Janette Wandia, Ochanda Victoria Achieng, Agutu Christabel Irene, and Kitur Wilson Kipchumba.
In the Kadhi courts, 15 officers were promoted to Senior Principal Kadhi.
They include Hussein Ishaq Abdjuljabar, Mwaito Salim Juma, Otundo Rashid Kokonya, Ali Swaleh Mohamed, Isaack Hassan Mohamednoor, Mohamed Abdiazia Maalim, Salim Abdullah Mwidadi, Malampu Abdilatif Silau, Ramadhani Khamis, Tullu Adan Ibrahim, Salat Muktar Billow, Wako Ali Dida, Galgalo Adan, Vumbi Salim Habib, and Muhammed Shaban Issa.
Twenty officers were promoted to Principal Kadhi.
The list comprises Ahmed Isaack Maalim, Opacha Jamal Imodoi, Hassan Mohamed Hussein, Wendo Shaban Wendo, Mwambele Mohamed Suleiman, Gavava Awadh Mohamed, Randu Mohamed Garama, Muriuki Nicholas Muriithi, Swaleh Mahdi Omar Khamis and Dogo Sheikh Dabasoo.
Others are Muhiyidin Sambul Mohamed, Daffa Hassan Omar, Shunu Mustafa Guyo, Wehliye Mohammed Sheikh, Idris Nyamagosa Nyaboga, Mohamed Mahamud Ibrahim, Fahad Ismael Mohamed, Muhumed Kule Mohamed, Karanja Thulkif Waweru, and Dadacha Ali Ibrahim.
In its statement, the JSC emphasised that the promotions are part of a broader strategy to “strengthen judicial capacity by expanding both territorial and pecuniary jurisdiction of officers to manage matters of greater value and complexity.”
The commission also noted its commitment to “recognising excellence by rewarding high-performing officers and fostering career progression across the Judiciary.”
The secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, Winfridah Mokaya, congratulated the officers.
“These advancements reflect not only individual excellence and dedication, but also the commission’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the rule of law, improving access to justice and service, with integrity and excellence while being accountable to the people of Kenya.”
The promotions are expected to bolster efficiency in service delivery and reinforce the Judiciary’s role in upholding justice across the country.
