Africa-Press – Kenya. Former Chief Justice David Maraga on Monday led a meet-and-greet event in Luanda to rally support for Benson Otieno, the United Green Movement (UGM) candidate in the upcoming Ugunja by-election.
Maraga, who has recently taken an active role in UGM’s political activities, urged residents to embrace leadership anchored on integrity, accountability, and people-centred development.
He was recently unveiled as the UGM presidential flag bearer for the 2027 General Election during an event held at the party’s headquarters on October 2, 2025.
At the same event, Otieno received his nomination certificate to contest the Ugunja parliamentary seat on the UGM ticket.
Maraga was also presented with copies of the Kenyan Constitution in English and Kiswahili, along with his official UGM membership certificate.
He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and promoting the rule of law if elected president.
The Luanda event also marked the official launch of Otieno’s grassroots campaign.
The Ugunja parliamentary seat fell vacant following a recent Cabinet reshuffle by President William Ruto, in which former Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, triggering a by-election.
The United Green Movement, which advocates for environmental conservation, ethical leadership, and sustainable development, is seeking to strengthen its presence in Siaya County, a region traditionally dominated by larger political parties.
Maraga called on voters to reject divisive politics and support leaders focused on public service and good governance.
Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday, Maraga also expressed willingness to work with like-minded political leaders, emphasising that his motivation is rooted in defending the Constitution and fighting corruption.
“We will work with anyone who shares our vision — someone committed to enforcing the Constitution, standing up against corruption, and protecting citizens from exploitation,” said Maraga.
“I am ready to work with such people.”
He also urged young people to take part in shaping the country’s future through the ballot.
“Don’t just talk. Let your vote be your tool for transformation,” he said, encouraging the youth to treat their voter’s card as a weapon for change.
The by-election is scheduled for November 27, 2025.
The official campaign period will run from October 8 to November 24, ending 48 hours before election day.
Campaigns will be allowed between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
The timelines are designed to ensure a transparent and organised electoral process, allowing both voters and candidates adequate time to engage and participate.
The UGM campaign caravan is expected to continue touring Ugunja Constituency in the coming days, with planned stops in various wards and local centers.
