Africa-Press – Kenya. The African Union (AU) plans to harmonize the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the transport sector, with the goal of ensuring its uniform adoption by member states, the head of the AU Commission’s Transport and Mobility Division, Eric Ntagengerwa, announced on Wednesday, in Luanda.
The official was speaking at the panel on “Infrastructure and Innovation Forum: Local Digital Solutions”, held within the framework of the III Summit on Financing for Infrastructure Development in Africa, which is taking place in the Angolan capital.
He said that the AU initiative aims to create common policies and guidelines to promote the use of artificial intelligence on the continent, ensuring that its implementation contributes to the modernization and efficiency of transportation systems.
To him, the use of AI in the sector could improve rail transport, the management of logistics centers and traffic control, allowing for more effective preventive maintenance and continuous monitoring, which reinforces the safety and resilience of infrastructure.
Eric Ntagengerwa also stated that, within the framework of the Infrastructure Development Programme in Africa (PIDA), the creation of smart data-driven corridors is underway and were designed to support African countries in building modern and interconnected transport networks.
In this regard, it is crucial to mobilize specific funding for the implementation of AI in the transport sector, particularly in aviation, where data sharing between airports and enhanced security are identified as priorities.
Eric Ntagengerwa also advocated for investing in intelligent and integrated systems to attract long-term investments and support initiatives such as the Africa 2050 Agenda, which aim for sustainable economic growth, as well as technological innovation on the continent.
