Africa-Press – Kenya. The government has invested Sh25 billion in Machakos County to improve the living standards of residents through affordable housing units, modern markets, and student hostels.
The announcement was made on Friday by President William Ruto during a public address in Machakos town.
According to Ruto, the investment forms part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, create economic opportunities, and improve access to essential services.
“These initiatives are aimed at uplifting the lives of our people by providing affordable housing, creating vibrant markets, and accommodating our students in modern hostels,” he said.
In the 2025/2026 financial year, he said the government has also allocated Sh3 billion to upgrade 360 kilometers of roads across the county.
The project is expected to enhance connectivity, open new economic frontiers, and boost trade within and beyond Machakos.
“Good roads are the arteries of development, and these upgrades will make it easier for our people to move goods and access services,” he added.
Recognising the importance of electricity in modern life, Ruto stated that the government is lighting up 10,000 homes in the county this financial year at a cost of Sh1.4 billion.
He emphasised that electricity should no longer be a privilege for a few but a right for all residents.
Water security is also a priority, with Sh700 million set aside for the compensation of residents affected by the Miwongoni Dam project.
This initiative will address water shortages in Machakos town while ensuring that affected residents are fairly compensated.
“The Miwongoni Dam will provide much-needed water to our people, and we are committed to a process that is fair and transparent,” he said.
These projects are among several transformative initiatives positioning Machakos as one of country’s fastest-developing counties.
The Head of State assured residents that the investments reflect a commitment to inclusive growth, economic empowerment, and an improved quality of life.
Leaders from the county who accompanied the president reaffirmed their dedication to a prosperous future for Machakos, stressing that continued development will be guided by the needs and aspirations of the people.
With major investments in housing, roads, energy, and water, the county is poised for significant growth and improved livability in the years ahead.
The President was in the county as part of his ongoing development tour of Ukambani region.
Ruto also used the opportunity to share his development scorecard as he outlined a vision for a more prosperous future.
Earlier on, he handed over keys to the proud new homeowners of the Machakos Town Affordable Housing Programme Phase 1, comprising 220 quality units constructed at a cost of Sh541 million.
At the same time, broke ground for Phase 2 of the project, a substantial Sh1.6 billion investment that will deliver an additional 570 modern, dignified housing units.
