Africa-Press – Kenya. KCB Chess Team patron Isaac Babu has laid down the gauntlet ahead of this weekend’s Eldoret Open Chess Championship Grand Prix, declaring the squad’s intent to stamp their authority on the tournament.
The two-day event has attracted more than 200 players from Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan. They will compete in the Open, Junior, Ladies and Corporate categories.
Speaking before the championship, Babu said the bankers are aiming for a strong showing across the board. “This is a tricky competition, with strong competitors from across the region.
Our goal is to win as many games as possible, claim more categories, and dominate the competition,” Babu said. KCB head into the Eldoret test boosted by the arrival of Gong Thong and Jadon Simiyu.
The pair join a lineup led by Candidate Master Benjamin Magana and FIDE Master Joyce Nyaruai. The team also features rising players Robert Mcligeyo, Hugh Kaloki and Elizabeth Cassidy.
Thong said he was eager to make his mark in his first major outing for the bankers. “It is an honour to join the KCB Chess Team, especially as we prepare for such a competitive Grand Prix,” Thong said.
“The team has a great mix of experience and young talent, and I am looking forward to learning, contributing, and delivering my best performance in Eldoret.
”The Eldoret Open Grand Prix is part of the qualification pathway to the annual National Chess Championship, where the winners drive away with a brand-new car.
