Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has led the country in mourning the death of renowned American civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson, describing him as a global champion for justice, equality and human dignity.

In a condolence message, Ruto praised Jackson’s lifelong commitment to fighting discrimination, expanding opportunities for the disadvantaged and advancing the rights of marginalised communities across the world.

“We mourn the passing of Jesse Jackson, a steadfast voice for justice and human dignity,” Ruto said.

He noted that for decades, Jackson stood at the forefront of social justice movements, challenging governments and institutions to confront inequality and create fairer societies.

“Across decades of public life, he challenged the global community to expand opportunity and confront inequality, with courage and moral clarity,” he said.

Ruto described the late civil rights icon as a unifying figure who dedicated his life to service through advocacy, community organising and bridge-building across political, racial and social divides.

“He devoted his life to lifting others, organising, advocating and building bridges. His legacy will endure in the causes he advanced and the lives he changed,” the President said.

Jackson, a close ally of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., rose to international prominence for his role in the American civil rights movement and later became a leading voice for economic justice, voter rights and social inclusion.

He founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organisation that championed equal opportunities for minorities and disadvantaged groups.

Over the years, Jackson’s influence extended beyond the United States, as he engaged in peace missions, humanitarian efforts and diplomatic initiatives in various parts of the world.

Ruto said Jackson’s life and work remain a powerful reminder of the impact of principled leadership and sustained activism in shaping a more just society.

“His legacy will continue to inspire generations to stand up for fairness, dignity and equal opportunity for all,” he said.

The Head of State also conveyed his condolences to Jackson’s family, friends and the global community that benefited from his advocacy.

“May his memory continue to guide humanity toward a more just and compassionate world,” Ruto said.

On his part, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki mourned Jackson as a towering figure in the fight against racial prejudice, bigotry, injustice and the struggle of the black race against oppression.

“A voice of reason and a champion for equality, Jackson leaves behind a rich legacy that proves the possibility of righting the wrongs of the past and creating a future in which all races, religions, generations and both genders share in the prosperity of society,” Kindiki said.

“The world is very much the poorer without him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends and his nation on the loss of one of the most distinguished sons of America. May his soul find rest in eternity.”
