A helicopter crashed and burst into flames in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-county, in Nandi County, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

According to the early reports, the chopper is said to have killed six passengers on board when it went down. The identities of those on board the plane remain unknown.

The plane is said to have crashed at 4:45pm and burst into flames moments after hitting the ground in Mosop.

In pictures and videos, residents could be seen rushing to the scene to assist in rescuing any survivors.

At the moment, reports from Nandi indicate the helicopter’s registration number is 5Y-DSB, owned by a company based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

According to data available on Flightradar24, the plane is an Airbus Helicopters H125 and was used by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on September 15, 2025. It is unclear whether the CS has used the plane since then.

A search of the tail number shows the aircraft left Nairobi at 11:02am on Saturday; however, it does not show when the plane landed at its destination.

Furthermore, available data does not indicate when the plane was scheduled to depart its destination.

According to recorded data, the plane made two other trips this month, with one on February 22, 2026, departing at 1:32pm from an undisclosed location to an unrecorded destination.

At the same time, on February 21, it made a trip from Nairobi to Wilson Airport, departing at 9:32am and landing at 6:16pm.

Police say the bodies that have been recovered from the scene have yet to be identified, as reports online indicate prominent figures may be among those who were ferried by the ill-fated chopper.

Further search of the plane indicates that the plane was used by the former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga, and on April 1, 2022, at 5:50pm, it was vandalised by youths after chaos erupted during the burial ceremony of the late Jackson Kibor.

Among those in attendance was the late Raila Odinga, and according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), at the closure of the ceremony, chaos erupted, and stones and other projectiles were hurled at the former Prime Minister by incited youth, maliciously damaging his helicopter’s windscreen.
