Kenya Railways Announces Temporary Closure of Moi Avenue in Mombasa, Lists Alternative Routes

Kenya Railways has announced a temporary traffic disruption along Moi Avenue in Mombasa to pave the way for emergency repair works on a key railway bridge.

In a public notice dated Friday, February 27, the corporation said a section of Moi Avenue would be closed on Sunday, March 1, 2026, for four hours, between 6am and 10am.

“Kenya Railways wishes to inform the public of a temporary traffic disruption along Moi Avenue in Mombasa following the planned closure of a section of the road,” Kenya Railways announced.

According to Kenya Railway, the closure will affect the stretch between the Moi Avenue-Tangana Road roundabout and the Moi Avenue-Mogadishu Road roundabout.

The Corporation noted that the temporary shutdown is necessary to facilitate scheduled emergency repair works on the Mbaraki Rail Over Road Bridge located along Moi Avenue.

The agency further maintained that the scheduled works were essential to ensure the safety and reliability of railway infrastructure to avoid any incidents in the future.

Motorists using the busy route have been advised to plan their journeys and use the designated alternative roads during the four-hour closure.

For motorists heading from KPA Gate 10 and the docks area, Kenya Railways has advised them to use Mogadishu Road, then connect to Zanzibar Road and later Shimazi Road.

Those seeking access to KPA Gate 10 and the docks area have been directed to use Tangana Road, proceed to Mijikenda Street, then Lumumba Road, before joining Shimazi Road.

The corporation further urged drivers to strictly observe traffic management arrangements that will be put in place during the closure period.

“Motorists are advised to observe the traffic management arrangements and comply with instructions from police officers and traffic marshals on site,” the Corporation stated.

While making the announcement, Kenya Railways expressed regret for any inconvenience that may be caused, but emphasised that the repairs are essential to maintaining public safety.
