Africa-Press – Kenya. Promotion-chasing Mombasa United will be targeting their eighth consecutive victory when they face Fortune Sacco FC on Sunday in a crucial National Super League clash at Kianyaga.
Head coach Gilbert Selebwa expects a stern test but insists his side is prepared to fight for maximum points as they look to maintain momentum in the title race.
Kianyaga is a hostile hunting ground, but we are not afraid. We have gone to other away venues and picked wins. We want to win against Fortune Sacco so that we remain in the hunt for the NSL title,” said Selebwa.
Mombasa United head into the fixture in red-hot form, having won eight straight matches, and are keen to extend that run as pressure mounts from close challengers.
“Every remaining game is important to us. We have won eight straight games and we want to continue with our winning streak,” he added.
With Migori United breathing down their necks, Selebwa emphasised that his squad remains fully focused on securing promotion to the top tier. However, the coastal side will be without influential captain Peter Mbunya and right-back Austine Nyagoi, both sidelined through injury.
“Mbunya suffered a knock against Kabati Youth last weekend, and we have decided to rest him. I expect him to be back for our next game. I’m not worried about their absence because we have able replacements,” Selebwa noted. Mombasa United last tasted defeat on January 11, when they fell 1-0 to Soy United at Eldoret Showground.
Elsewhere, Migori Youth FC will also be in action on Sunday as they host former top-flight side FC Talanta at Awendo Green Stadium, where they will be looking to preserve their unbeaten home record this season.
On Saturday, third-placed Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) will aim to bounce back when they take on struggling Vihiga United at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay. Coach Charles Warinda admitted his side must respond after last weekend’s setback.“It will be a tough match, but we need the win for us to remain in contention for a promotion slot,” he said.
As the season enters a decisive phase, the battle for promotion places is intensifying, with every result carrying significant weight in the race to reach the top flight.
