Africa-Press – Kenya. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed former Haitian prime minister Garry Conille as the new UN Resident Coordinator in Kenyan, the UN said on Wednesday.

Conille took his post on Wednesday, according to a press release.

The 60-year-old politician has worked with the United Nations since 1999, including as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

He was also the UN Resident Coordinator in Burundi and then Jamaica between 2017 and 2022.

In Haiti, Conille first served as prime minister from 2011 to 2012.

He was brought back to the position in 2024 as part of the country’s Transitional Presidential Council, which hoped to bring back political stability.

Conille’s second premiership also saw the first deployments of Kenyan troopsto the country, as part of a force mandated by the UNto help Haiti restore security amid acute gang violence.

Conille was succeeded by business Alix Didier Fils-Aimé who remains Haiti’s acting prime minister and retains full executive power to this day.

In his new role in Kenya, Conille is expected to work on implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

Garry Conille has a long history with the United Nations, having worked with the organization since 1999. His previous roles include serving as the UN Resident Coordinator in Burundi and Jamaica, where he focused on various development initiatives. Conille’s appointment comes at a time when Kenya is looking to enhance its collaboration with the UN on sustainable development goals, reflecting the global commitment to address pressing social and economic challenges.
