Africa-Press – Kenya. Young Mothers and Lucky Stars are among the teams enlisted for the third edition of the Football Mums Tournament set for April 19 at Kibera DC Grounds.
The one-day event, organised by Path to Russia in partnership with Kibra Girls Soccer Academy, will bring together teams from across Kibera, with a focus on empowering women and promoting the girl child through sport.
Open to participants of all ages, the tournament provides a rare inclusive platform for both young girls and mothers to compete and showcase their talent.
Winners will pocket Sh10,000, with the runners-up earning Sh8,000 and third place taking home Sh5,000. All teams will receive financial support.
Event coordinator Eric Ochieng’ said the initiative is aimed at creating opportunities for talented girls who often lack exposure.
“From the conversations and visits, we have lots of talented girls who don’t have the opportunity. We are giving them a chance to showcase their skills, and who knows, it could open a door for them in the future in the world of sports,” said Ochieng’.
He noted that the first two editions, held last month, have already sparked growing interest among girls in the community.
“We are seeing more girls take up sports, and we need to provide them with a vehicle to grow in their talent and probably end up playing for some of the top clubs in the country and maybe the national team in the future,” he added.
He also called on corporates and well-wishers to support future editions as organisers seek to expand the tournament’s reach and impact.
