The Kenyan High Commission in Canberra has confirmed the death of a Kenyan woman working in Australia under unclear circumstances, confirming that investigations surrounding her death have commenced.

In a statement on Monday, May 25, the embassy confirmed that it is engaging Australian authorities to determine the cause of the death of the 25-year-old woman who has since been identified as Sheila Chebii.

The High Commission noted that it was aware of concerns raised regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and revealed that it was actively seeking factual information and updates from relevant Australian authorities in line with Australian laws and procedures.

“The High Commission urges members of the public to refrain from speculation or dissemination of unverified information while the relevant authorities undertake the necessary investigations and coronial processes,” the statement read in part.

Sheila is reported to have died on Monday, May 18, moments after checking into her work station, according to information shared by relatives.

Family members claim Sheila was later found on the fourth floor of the building after allegedly falling from the 19th floor, where she had been carrying out her duties.

However, the family says several aspects of the incident remain unclear and have raised questions.

The family argues that Sheila sustained what they described as minimal injuries despite the reported fall, including a small forehead injury, bruises on the arms, an injury on the hip, and damage to one eye.

They further allege that no witnesses saw the fall and that CCTV footage reportedly only captured Sheila entering a hallway on the 19th floor before she was later discovered on the fourth floor.

Timelines of the events before and after her demise have also been flagged. The family alleges that police reports indicated the deceased died at around noon, yet family members claim she made a phone call and sent messages around the same time, raising more questions than answers.

In response, the Mission acknowledged the concerns raised, noting that it remained committed to safeguarding the welfare and interests of Kenyans living in Australia, pledging to pursue the matter to the core and provide details.

It, however, warned the members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information until investigations into the matter are completed.

“The High Commission urges members of the public to refrain from speculation or dissemination of unverified information while the relevant authorities undertake the necessary investigations and coronial processes,” it stated.

Further updates on investigations are set to be provided by the embassy as they unfold in the subsequent days.
