Africa-Press – Kenya. West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has ditched Gideon Moi’s KANU and unveiled a new outfit ahead of 2022 General Election
Lonyangapuo, flanked by Pokot South MP David Pkosing and former Tiaty MP Asman Kamama, unveiled Kenya United Party (KUP) in Nairobi on Thursday.
The party’s theme colours are red, white and blue with Umoja Wetu as it’s slogan.
The county boss said the new party will champion the interest of the Pastoralist community scattered across more than 10 counties.
“KUP believes in household economy as that is the basis of development in the country. We believe in empowerment of women, youth and people with disability,” Lonyangapuo, who is the leader of the new outfit, said.
He added that the party will enter into an alliance with like minded parties to ensure that the community is not left out of the government that will be formed in 2022.
He however said they have not settled on the possible coalition partners l, saying they present their issues to existing parties and would only work with the ones that would incorporate the community’s interest in their manifesto.
“At the moment, we are not bothered to know who the presidential candidates are. At the momentum, we want to market the party and ensure it’s in the next government,” he said.
Pkosing said that he’s a close member of the party, hinting that he could ditch Jubilee for the new outfit
He said that party main agenda is to change the political discussion and landscape in the country by ensuring that politics of ‘livelihoods’ is brought to the stage.
“KUP brings a new political discourse in Kenya. We want to see livelihoods’ being brought into the discussion of 2022.,”he said.
He added, “We want to talk about food on the table, water, security. These big parties we have are town or urban parties. We are bringing a different menu on the table,” he said.
Kamama said they are now embarking on marketing the party across the country.
Currently, the party has offices in 32 counties.
