Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenyatta University Titans’ coach Richard Wandera has said the students are itching for a quick return to the Premier League after taking control of the Women’s Super League.
The students are unbeaten in eight matches thus far this season, having taken the second-tier competition like a duck to water. Titans have opened a seven-point gap over second-placed Mombasa Sports Club.
They have 22 points and alongside MSC, look like teams destined to dine with the ‘big girls’ come next season.
“Promotion is within touching distance for us but we still have a long way to go even though we are left with four matches. The aim is to finish the season without losing a match. Nobody loves dropping points,” Wandera said.
Titans were relegated from the Premier League in 2019 and the two-year Covid-19 enforced break meant Titans had to wait till this year to return to action. Captained by Bethsheba Mercy, Titans are keen to avoid late slip-ups.
“Complacency must not creep in at all costs. We have to take it one match at a time,” added Wandera.
Experienced Melody Nyagaka, Monica Kitui, Miriam Mwangi, Mercy William, Gaudencia Ochieng and Laura Webala have been key to the team’s resurgence.
Ochieng made the women’s national team provisional squad but failed to break into the traveling contingent for the Commonwealth Games that were held in Birmingham between July and August.
Titans will have to make do without most of these players next season, according to Wandera.
“Four of the aforementioned players have already graduated and might be unavailable upon our return. Remember there are also other engagements so we must plan well for the future. We need to have a smooth transition so that no void is left upon their exit,” said Wandera.
Fitness and finishing are areas earmarked for improvement while defensive solidity has been a great weapon to the team.
“We have conceded just two goals, the best record in the division. In terms of fitness, we are not at the level we want to be and that was evident in Mombasa last weekend when we ran out of gas. Attacking-wise, we must put our act together,” he concluded.
