Africa-Press – Kenya. Nyandarua Senator John Methu has tabled a motion in the Senate to discuss reforms at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission after the August 9 election.
In a statement, the senator now wants IEBC to effect legal action on the four IEBC commissioners.
“The senate calls upon IEBC to affect the legal, policy and institutional reforms recommended by the Supreme Court ruling on the Presidential Petition,” Methu said.
The Senator said the commission is mandated to work as a collective unit and cannot be conducted with the exclusion of any member.
Commissioners Juliana Cherera, Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’anya and Francis Wanderi denounced the election results announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.
Methu said that the decision made by the four commissioners breached good corporate governance as indicated in the constitution.
Methu urged the Senate Standing Committee on justice legal affairs and human rights to introduce legislation to seal existing loopholes in the electoral process.
“The reforms include the manner of appointment of future IEBC commissioners and enhancement of the statutory and regulatory framework on the separate policy and administrative remit of IEBC,” he said.
The senator condemned the actions of the four IEBC commissioners.
