Africa-Press – Kenya. Change of training methods has breathed fresh air into the Thika Queens squad and enhanced players’ fitness, coach Joseph Oyoo has revealed.
Oyoo, who replaced Benta Achieng at the helm more than a month ago, said a lack of basics was the reason why the Kiambu-based side failed to defend their title in a below-per-performance last season.
The former Mombasa Olympic tactician said football is not all about kicking and playing long balls but a team must have a certain playing style based on the characteristics of players available.
“It was necessary to adjust the way the team used to train under the previous regime and do things our own way,” Oyoo opened up.
“I was surprised when players told me that scoring and shooting techniques were never introduced to them and so we have spent time perfecting the art. Now we must build up from the back with short neat passes through midfield to attack and players are entrusted with roles.”
He went on: “The team is exciting to watch. The two Ugandan imports have shone up the midfield and could be our secret weapon going forward. Fitness-wise, the girls look much sharper and quicker.”
The gaffer added that Thika needed a culture reboot to get the team back on track otherwise the team will continue basking in their past glory.
“Some experienced players had overstayed so they had to move on to create room for the fresh blood.”
International full-backs Nelly Sawe and Becky Akinyi have left while title-winning goalkeeper Monica Karambu joined Zetech Sparks.
In the meantime, Oyoo has tipped the duo of Grace Nekesa and Melisa Anyango to hit the ground running and believes they have what it takes to don Harambee Starlets colours.
“In the friendly matches we have played thus far, Nekesa and Anyango have proved a handful. They are young and energetic. It won’t be long before we see them in national colours because they have the potential.”
