Africa-Press – Kenya. KCB assistant coach Mark Mshila has set his sights on defending the Impala Floodlit title at the end of this month.
Mshila believes the Impala Floodlit will be great preparation for the start of the Kenya Cup season next month as they test their strategies and systems.
“ Our pre-season has gone well and we want to defend the title we won three years ago. The players are hungry and focused to start the season on a high,” added Mshila.
The backs coach said they have put the disappointment of last season behind them after losing 24-17 to Menengai Oilers in the Kenya Cup semis and 9-6 in the Enterprise Cup final.
“We have put last season behind us and it’s a fresh start for us this season and hope to win,” she said.
Mshila said they have worked on several facets which went against them last season.
Generally, our setpieces have been the foundation of this team but we struggled a bit last season, especially in the semis. Our kick chase plus our defence were not the best,” he added.
Mshila expects a competitive season with the likes of champions Kabras and Menengai Oilers pushing them into the race for the title.
“It’s going to be a tough season. Teams have strengthened and we are prepared for the challenge that will come,” said Mshila.
KCB and Kenya fullback Darwin Mukidza said they are confident they will bounce back from last season’s heartbreak.
“We have learned our lessons and you will see a fired-up side for the season ahead. It’s afresh start and the boys are relishing the challenge,” added Mukidza.
Elsewhere, JKUAT beat Kimathi University 36-7 to register their second win of the Varsity League played at Meru University. Coach Newton Partet was delighted by the performance of his charges.
“We played well and dominated the game. We want to win this tournament and go on to compete in the East Africa Championship.
