Africa-Press – Kenya. As part of its tax base expansion program, the Kenya Revenue on Wednesday will undertake a data collection exercise on rental properties within Nairobi and Nairobi Metropolis.

In a notice by the tax man, KRA officers involved with the exercise will identify themselves using the authority’s staff identification cards.

‘These cards can be verified by dialling the USSD code *572, through the KRAM-service App or using KRA Thibitisha which is hosted on the KRA website, www.kra.go.ke,” reads the notice.

KRA has called on the public to cooperate and provide the information required during the exercise.

The county has 17,000 houses in Maringo, Uhuru, Kaloleni, Jericho, Buruburu, Kariobangi South, Ziwani and Jerusalem where tenants pay between Sh2,000 and Sh20,000 monthly rent depending on the location.

It also has houses in other parts of the city.

In May 2019, it was revealed that City Hall is owed Sh224 million by tenants living in the over 16,000 county houses across the capital.

Nairobi county housing director Marion Rono back then said the debt had been accrued by tenants residing in 16,746 houses belonging to City Hall.

It was revealed that defaulters were the biggest contributors to the dwindling collections with tenants in houses in Maringo and Woodley estates, the biggest culprits.
