Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has announced that Kazi Mtaani Programme will be converted into a tree-planting initiative.

Speaking while exchanging views with the business community and development partners on the drought situation in Kenya, Ruto said the move will help address the adverse effects of the climate change that Kenya is facing.

“We have to initiate long-term resilience activities to cushion the people against drought and food insecurity.”

“The situation is still dire especially in 20 counties due to crop failure as a result of failed rains,” he added.

The President said that his government is still requesting more funds that will target a more immediate response, and his administration will continue to offer support to farmers to produce more food.

“We must consolidate our solution to the situation. We are still requesting more funds targeting more immediate response.”

In October, Ruto abolished the Kazi Mtaani programme started by his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta, two years ago, saying that it was outdated.

“Kazi Mtaani is now outdated. Collecting garbage is not going to be the case anymore. Houses will now be our business and the youths are going to get jobs,” he said.

In the lead-up to the August 9 poll, Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza team claimed some individuals were fleecing the youth of their money, questioning why the money was reduced from Sh1,000 to Sh450.

“What is the aim of the programme if some individuals are following this money and pocketing yet again?” Ruto questioned.
