Weru wants oilers to fix attack and lineout mistakes

Africa-Press – Kenya. Menengai Oilers coach Gibson Weru will focus on attack and lineout ahead of the Kenya Cup kick-off later this month.

Following a 16 -11 upset defeat to Nondies in the Impala Floodlit tournament semifinal, Weru says there is work to be done before the season opener.

“This is a wake-up call and our attack needs to be sharper and much more refined. Our lineout and defensive pattern did not function well last week,” added Weru.

He said the defeat was a blessing in disguise and their urge to make amends could easily push them to the title.

“It’s good when we see these shortcomings in pre-season. They give us time to work on them and hopefully come out better,” he said.

The Nakuru-based side have six players in the Simbas squad playing in the repechage and former Kenya Sevens playmaker believes they will be tested at the start of the season.

“There is a gap between the experienced and our upcoming players and we would like to see the latter at par with those playing in the first team,” he added.

Weru’s charges open their campaign against Mean Machine, followed thereafter by Quins, Masinde Muliro University and Homeboyz.

Weru said the lessons learned from last year’s final defeat to Kabras will be a big motivation.

“Our target is to go all the way and win the title. We have learned our lessons from last season and with the belief and morale in the team, we can win it.”

Oilers will be attempting to finish the tournament on high when they face Blak Blad for a third-place playoff match.

“We will be going all out for a win. The boys were really stung by the defeat last week and will want to correct the errors we made against Nondies.”

The final will pit Nondies and KCB and will be played on Saturday at the Impala Club.
