Africa-Press – Kenya. Zetech University Sparks thumped Kenyatta University Oryx 67-27 at Strathmore University courts to shoot to the top of the women’s Kenya Basketball League.

“Despite the win, Kenyatta University played better than they did in the first leg. But my girls are on the right track as we wait for weekend matches against equity and Eagle Wings,” said Sparks’ coach Maurice Obilo.

National team star Christine Akinyi led Sparks with 13 points while Chantal Kiyobe posted nine. Akon Akok managed 10 for the losers.

“Our offensc worked only in the first two quarters. We were careless with our offence but we will address that during our training,” said Kenyatta University coach Caleb Osewe.

A last-gasp basket by Liz Okumu gave the University of Nairobi “Dynamites” a close 52-50 win over Eagle Wings in another game.

“The game was a close battle from the onset and we had to compose ourselves in the last minute and score the easy basket and it worked,” said Okumu.

“I fouled our opponent which cost us two points and so I had to find a way to get the team a win.”

Okumu scored 14 points, including her only basket in the last quarter that won the game. Faith Atieno made12, Ros Mshilla bagged the losers 18 points including her team’s opening nine and Michelle Otinda managed 16

“We just cracked in the last minute. Concentration lapse cost us the game,” noted Mshilla.

In the men’s matches, host Strathmore University Blades pipped Kenyatta University Pirates 59-51. Blades took the fourth quarter 7-4 as Kennedy Dwalo led the host with 15 points. Dolph Otieno registered 14 for KU.

In Mombasa, Congo Nets lost to Moischers Nets 63-53 with Hamza Buoga sinking 25 points and Brian Oyoo 15 in this lower division tie.
