Africa-Press – Kenya. Shujaa skipper Nelson Oyoo believes his side have nothing to fear ahead of the Cape Town Sevens this weekend in South Africa.

Kenya picked up five points from the Dubai leg over the weekend and the captain believes they are on the road to recovery.

“From our performance this weekend, I believe we have what it takes to be competitive. We just need to make a few tweaks to our game plan to reach the Main Cup quarterfinals.”

Shujaa drew 19-19 with Australia, 14-14 with Great Britain, beat Canada 17-7, and lost 27-12 to South Africa. They also lost 21-17 to Fiji in the two-day tournament to place 11th overall in the tournament.

Shujaa have been placed in a tough group for the Cape Town tournament, where they face New Zealand, Argentina and Spain in Pool C.

Oyoo termed the pool as tricky but promised to take it one game at a time. “We know our quality and strengths and we know we can hurt the opposition,” added Oyoo.

The Nakuru RFC veteran said they have improved on the kickoff reception which has been an Achilles heel for the side for the better part of this year.

“We were able to dominate the aerial contest because it’s a key phase of the Sevens game. If you can’t win the kickoffs, possession becomes a challenge,” said Oyoo.

Shujaa are currently 14th on the log with six points and Oyoo said there is room for improvement for the remainder of the series.

“We led in three of those games we played in Dubai and we have to finish strongly. We must keep our concentration and ensure we minimise our errors,” added Oyoo.

Tony Omondi led the Shujaa point scorers in Dubai with 17 points (six conversions and one try) while Billy Odhiambo was second on 15 points, having scored 3 tries.

GROUPS: Pool ‘A’— South Africa, France, Fiji, Canada; Pool B: Ireland, Samoa, Uruguay, Japan; Pool C: New Zealand, Argentina, Kenya, Spain; Pool D: USA, Australia, Great Britain and Uganda.
