Cabinet approves proposal to host AFCON in 2027

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto’s cabinet has approved a proposal to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. “This is a stepping stone towards the target of Harambee Stars qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2030,” the statement read.

This will be alongside the East African Community partner states. Cabinet noted that the joint bid would deploy the power of sports in furthering regional integration.

This means Kenya can now bid to host the AFCON, in partnership with the EAC community by writing a letter to the Confederation of African Football. The country will also have to prepare in terms of building stadiums, and infrastructure.

In 2017, CAF announced that Kenya was not in a position to hold the African Nations Championship due to a lack of preparedness. The championship was to take place in January 2018.
