Africa-Press – Kenya. The Machakos University student shot by a police officer during student demonstrations on Monday has died.
The student succumbed to the injuries at Machakos Level 5 Hospital where he was receiving medication on Wednesday morning.
Information on his death was received by many including fellow students with shock.
He had been fighting for his life at the hospital after undergoing surgery following the incident.
The student together with his colleagues had staged a demonstration against escalating insecurity in the area.
A police officer who shot the deceased had been earlier arrested and locked up at Machakos police station where he was attached.
“The student is currently fighting for his life at the Machakos Level 5 hospital and is suspected to have been part of a group of students that had engaged the police in running battles for the better part of the day,” the DCI earlier said.
A total of nine firearms — five pistols, three G-3riffles and one AK-47 assault rifle – were seized from different police officers.
The weapons will be subjected to forensic ballistic analysis at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory to scientifically ascertain which firearms were misused during the demos.
The officer was arrested hours after another suspected cop was cornered in a robbery incident in the area and was placed behind bars.
The officer in plain clothes together with an accomplice attacked two students as they headed to their rented quarters in the wee hours of Monday morning.
“One of them was, however, lucky to escape as his classmate was attacked and his mobile phone snatched by the officer,” DCI said.
Quick action by students living nearby saved their colleague, leading to the arrest of the two who are now facing robbery with violence charges.
On December 2, 14 robbery with violence suspects linked to a spate of robberies targeting university students living outside the campus, were arrested and placed behind bars in an operation aimed at restoring sanity in the area.
“We appeal to the Machakos University students and their student leaders to remain calm as detectives expedite investigations into the security incidents and bring all the suspects to book,” DCI said.
Machakos county police commander Issa Mohammud on Monday said that 33 suspects had been arrested by Monday evening over criminal incidences in Machakos town and its environs.
