Africa-Press – Kenya. Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba believes Nyayo Stadium was given an injustice in its recent refurbishment despite the government forking millions of shillings.
On Monday, Namwamba was forced to hand over the Jamhuri Day Cup trophy to Sofapaka in darkness.
“It’s a shame that darkness fell upon us when we presented the prizes for the Jamhuri Day Cup because the Nyayo Stadium has no lights,” Namwamba said, adding: “The people who were supposed to fix the lights belong in jail.”
Despite the efforts put into renovating Nyayo Stadium, Namwamba said it still looks shabby.
“Even the pitch itself is not of good quality and we have to decide whether Nyayo is a football pitch or maybe leave it for national celebrations,” he said, promising to investigate how the billions of shillings allocated to improve the various facilities were used.
“I have looked at Kinoru — a red card. I looked at Kipchoge Keino last Saturday and if I could issue three red cards at ago, I would do that to Kipchoge Keino Stadium. I intend to do this with so many other facilities,” said Namwamba.
He said the two main facilities, Nyayo and Moi Stadium, Kasarani, are still in need of a more comprehensive improvement.
“Nyayo still looks like a piece from the Museums of Kenya. Kasarani has many challenges too. As we speak, we don’t have facilities that can be used for Fifa matches,” Namwamba said.
“In January, when we announce the logistics and details of Talanta Hela, we will also be sharing an ambitious, revolutionary plan to improve infrastructure.”
“It will be a well-thought-out plan, where we can have a few facilities that will be done very well. We don’t need to have eight or nine stadiums at the same time. We will have a few worthy of hosting Fifa and Caf matches,” he added.
