Africa-Press – Kenya. Following the tragic road accident at the notorious Ngata blackspot along Nakuru-Salgaa, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered for immediate installation of road signage and the construction of another lane.
This, Murkomen stated, is an immediate measure to help avert more incidents even as he announced short and long-term solutions. “I have this evening instructed Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement adequate measures to forestall any such accidents,” the CS said in a statement.
Among the signs to be erected are those reminding motorists to observe lane discipline and 50KPH speed limits. Police, he further stated, will enforce the orders including the use of speed guns. Murkomen also instructed the authority to immediately commence the construction of an additional lane.
In the plan to start by April next year, the authority is expected to separate the flow of opposing streams of traffic with jersey barriers similar to that of the Molo River-Sachangwan-Kibunja section.
The directive by the CS follows a tragic accident involving three vehicles that left eight people dead at the blackspot. Twenty-three others who escaped with injuries are admitted to Rift Valley provincial general hospital in Nakuru. Leaders and residents have also been pushing for the dualling of the road.
“Our recommendation is that the road is redesigned to accommodate a dual from Soilo junction to Ngata Gate or Salgaa town because statistics indicate that this is the area that has registered the majority of fatal accidents,” said Rongai MP Paul Cheboror.
