Africa-Press – Kenya. The 2022 Melbourne Marathon champion Timothy Kiplagat on Saturday took the honours at the highly-contested Abu Dhabi Marathon.
Kiplagat obliterated the strong field to cross the finish line in 2:05:20 ahead of compatriot Felix Kimutai (2:09:32). Ethiopia’s Adeladlew Mamo settled for third in 2:09:42.
Other Kenyans in the race included debutant Titus Mbishei, who placed fifth in 2:12:53. Two-time London Marathon champion Dickson Chumba and Kenneth Kiprop settled for sixth and seventh places in respective times of 2:14:46 and 2:15:00.
In the women’s category, Kenyan-born Bahraini Eunice Chumba took the honours in 2:20:41. Kenya’s Angela Tanui, who took the lead at the 25km mark was forced to settle for second place after Chumba took the lead from her at the 35km mark. Tanui clocked 2:21:12 to cross the finish line.
Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba sealed the podium places in 2:21:25. Another Kenyan in the race, Daisy Cherotich, settled for sixth place in 2:25:30.
