Africa-Press – Kenya. Homabay Town MP George Peter Kaluma has urged those who schooled under difficult conditions to defend the CDF fund. Kaluma took to Twitter early Sunday morning to remind Kenyans that there was a time, ” when all national schools in Kenya were in just one county; and a time when a school had to bear the name “Moi” to be built!”

The legislator called out those opposing the existence of the fund. “Do they know that more than 90 per cent of university students come from schools built through CDF!”Kaluma said.

The legislator said 95 per cent of all students in Kenyan universities come from CDF schools. He added that thousands of students have had to defer their studies and graduation because of delays in CDF disbursement.

“Let those of us who studied under trees, rain and sun; on jigger infested grounds defend CDF,” Kaluma said

This comes as MPs are set to amend the constitution through a parliamentary process, to entrench the CDF that was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

The lawmakers have formed a joint a committee to formulate the constitutional amendment bill. Earlier, Treasury Cabinet secretary Njuguna Ndung’u had agreed to release the funds following an advisory by Attorney General Justin Muturi.

Ndung’u said Muturi had advised that the Supreme Court pronounced itself on the CDF Act, 2013 and not the National Government-Constituency Development Fund Act, 2015. The ministry has been withholding the funds, citing the Supreme Court ruling that outlawed it, causing protests from the lawmakers.
