Africa-Press – Kenya. Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has said that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua fought for Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to be governor. Speaking on Tuesday, the legislature said that Gachagua is trying to ensure that the governor delivers what he promised during the campaign period.
“My message to governor Sakaja is that he must remember he was on the receiving end of Azimio, it was Gachagua who actually fought left, right and centre to ensure that Sakaja is the governor,” Orwobatold TV47.
She said that there is a clash on the plan to urbanise Nairobi and still ensure businesses are not criminalised. Orwoba said that Sakaja should remember that he was elected under UDA and that it is the party that ensured his win.
“However way Sakaja looks at it unless he wants to come out clean and say that he used UDA and after that, he doesn’t care about that. Unless he has something to tell us he must sit his ground and listen,” she said.
Gachagua, on Sunday, said that he lobbied to have Sakaja given the UDA party ticket for the capital’s gubernatorial seat. “I want to remind you that young man ( Sakaja), I lobbied for him to be the governor. I actually told Bishop Margaret Wanjiru to step aside for him,” he said.
On April 9, 2022, Bishop Wanjiru of Jesus is Alive Ministry stepped down from the Nairobi gubernatorial race. This was after a meeting held at the then Deputy President William Ruto’s official Karen Residence.
Wanjiru announced that she quit the race in favour of senator Sakaja, who was to fly with the UDA party ticket. In December 2022, Sakaja announced that long-distance matatus will be relocated from the CBD to Green Park terminus.
However, according to the DP, Sakaja ought to have consulted him before making decisions, which affect the businesses of the people of Mt Kenya – who gave him votes.
Gachagua warned Sakaja against implementing the plan to relocate matatus. He termed the move as ill-intentioned, which he claimed was aimed at persecuting the Mt Kenya business community, adding that it will disrupt businesses. However, Sakaja said there is no bad blood between him and the Deputy President.
