Africa-Press – Kenya. A section of MPs allied to President William Ruto have weighed in on the purported planned arrest of former Interior CS Fred Matiangi on Wednesday. They laughed it off as a “well-choreographed” drama.
According to the legislators, the act was intended at inciting Kenyans so as to invoke public sympathy. The MPs were led by National Assembly majority leader Kimani Ichungwa who addressed the press at Parliament buildings on Thursday.
They maintained that no police officer from any agency visited the home with the aim of arresting the former CS. “Last night’s drama was planned to incite public emotions and invoke public sympathy,” said Ichungw’a.
The incident, he argued, was poorly scripted work out of imagination by a few opposition leaders. He challenged the opposition to provide evidence of any police officer captured at the home of Matiangi as alleged to have happened.
“Show Kenyans a single photograph or a video recorded of police officers purported to be in that residence, or a CCTV evidence,” said the MP.
Maintaining the government will not act in a way as to harass any innocent Kenyan, he described the Wednesday night incident as a perfect case of the guilty always being afraid.
He, however, stated that the memories of how he misused the state machinery were fresh and so he should avoid panicking. “We want to tell Matiangi that we know all the ills that you committed…whatever you are afraid of, be patient and wait for the law to catch up with you,” he said.
He claimed the former CS misused his position and powers while in government. “We know there are those who are afraid because of the things they did in power by abusing power and today they are running scared but we want to assure them even as MPs we are going to stand to defend their rights, that nobody will harass them, they should hold their horses.” Dagoreti South MP John Kiarie and Mogotio counterpart Reuben Kiborek among several others were present.
