Kemsa reforms are underway, Ruto reveals

Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has revealed that plans to reform the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority are underway. Speaking on Tuesday, Ruto said that the reforms were necessary to ensure that medical supplies are delivered promptly.

“I want to state that our reforms of the Kemsa are well underway. We want to make it fit and transform it to a purpose vehicle for delivering our medical supplies in a competitive, cost-effective and timely manner,” he said.

Ruto explained that a significant medical policy targeting lowering the cost of medicines and medical commodities as a component of the cost of health care is the government’s endeavor to institute reforms at the agency.

The policy will facilitate procurement modalities including the possibility of bulk procurement conjunction with stakeholders including faith based and private organizations.

President Ruto further noted that the decision to establish and promote local manufacturing capacity for healthcare products together with the acquisition of technology was necessary.

“This is to make sure Kenya meets a significant proportion of its requirement through local production,” he added.

The Head of state added that the reforms will be accompanied by complementary efforts to make the NHIF cover a strategic purchaser of healthcare services.

“My team is working with the ministry of health to ensure that we have an essential package for every condition and item that we need in that space,” Ruto said.

He revealed that the reforms will be made public in the coming days. Ruto had earlier said the issues of cartels in Kemsa will be dealt with accordingly.

“We have to do a lot of work to ensure that all the work will continue. We are using technology to sort out the challenge of cartels in KEMSA. I know there are many hospitals that are run with public money and they do not do any work, it’s just monkey business,” he said.
