Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio leader Raila Odinga has told the Kenya Kwanza government to stop targeting lawyer Danstan Omari and content creator Eric Omondi.
Speaking on Wednesday at an Azimio prayer Rally at Jevanjee Gardens, Raila said that Omari was just doing his job.
“The other day, they were on Matiang’i, now it is lawyer Danstan Omari. DCI has summoned him tomorrow for investigations, he is just a lawyer doing his job,” he said.
“I want to tell you to leave Matiang’i and Omari alone.”
Raila also rebuked Eric Omondi’s arrest saying he was holding a peaceful demonstration.
“In London, a peaceful demonstration is done in front of the House of Commons and the White House. Demonstrators are protected by police,” he said.
Raila said that peaceful demonstration is legal and those who decide to do it should be protected.
The former Prime Minister said police have a responsibility of escorting Kenyans who decide to take part in peaceful demonstrations.
He said that as Azimio, their main goal is to preach peace in the country.
This comes after DCI opened investigations into the alleged home raid at the former Interior CS.
DCI summoned Omari, Matiang’i’s lawyer whom they believe is connected to the offence or has information which can assist in investigations.
Even after calling on the government to leave the two alone, Raila said that Eric Omondi should be freed.
Omondi was arrested on Tuesday for leading demonstrations against the rising cost of living in the streets of Nairobi.
Omondi alongside 17 others were charged with taking part in an unlawful assembly on Parliament Road.
They denied the charge and were released on Sh20,000 bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh10,000.
