Kenya can still afford to finance public education – Lugari MP

Africa-Press – Kenya. Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera has said the Kenyan government still possesses the ability to pay for public education for its citizens. The MP in an interview said that he believes public education sponsored by the government can still be actualised and termed misuse of resources as a major hindrance to achieving that goal.

“I have looked at this economy, the country can afford proper public education, we waste money on unnecessary things,” Nabii said.

Nabii said he will be petitioning the government to allocate more funds to school feeding programmes that will help to alleviate the hunger situation being felt around the country.

“We’ll be asking the government to add more money to our school feeding programmes and increase from two million to four million people so that all children in areas that are starving can get a hot meal in school. We can afford it,” he said.

He lamented over the increased number of teachers who have not been hired by the government despite completing their studies. He insisted that the government needs to place a priority on the education sector.

Nabii further noted that the government over the years has delayed executing promotions for the teachers who are currently employed. He said such delays will affect the quality of output generated by those teachers which in turn will play a detrimental role in our education system.
