Nyakang'o must resign over Sh15bn saga, Ahmednasir says

Africa-Press – Kenya. The admission by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o that she approved the utilisation of billions of shillings days to the August polls has triggered a storm in the country.

Nyakang’o on Tuesday told the National Assembly Public Petitions committee that she noticed irregularities but nonetheless approved the release of Sh15 billion because she was put under intense pressure.

She tabled what she claimed was the correspondence between her and a senior official at the Treasury who was acting at the behest of a senior State official.

But Ahmednasir said the admission amounts to a travesty of the law and Nyakang’o should as a such step down from office.

“In my humble opinion, Ms Margaret Nyakang’o the Controller of Budget must resign today or Parliament should start the process of removing her tomorrow. She can’t authorise the stealing of Sh15 billion two days to elections allegedly because she was coerced,” the lawyer said.

In the alleged conversation between Nyakang’o and the said Treasury official, Sh1 billion was meant for the Office of the President while some Sh10 billion was meant for the Infrastructure Ministry for some security project.

“Please help us expedite this. His Excellency might even call you if we don’t deal with this by 4 pm,” the text messages she alleges were from the official read in part.

“He just called and I assured him that I have spoken to you and you promised before the end of the day,” the official added.

The conversation allegedly took place on August 4, 2022.

Nyakang’o cites in the documents that she requested more time before she could okay the release of the funds.

“The timing requires up to tomorrow as I’m still out of the office,” she said.

“You need to devise how to deal with it. I am sorry but try,” the Treasury Official said in response.

On Sunday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua vowed to unmask individuals he claimed misappropriated public funds at the height of the pandemic and two days before the August 9 polls.

He said Sh6 billion was stolen during the middle of Covid-19 while Sh10 billion was stolen as the Supreme Court listened to the presidential petition.

“Money was being brought in cartons at Wilson Airport and flown with choppers to people’s homes,” he said during a Sunday service at the Jesus Winner Ministries on Thika Road.
